About environmental science
Environmental Science is a broad and exciting field that includes aspects of biology, chemistry and the physical sciences. It is much more than just learning about nature. It includes the processes that control the natural world and how humans and other organisms interact. Therefore, we will be delving into concepts around important earth systems, the interactions between those systems, and relationships between organisms (including humans!) and their environment. Also students will analyze complex environmental problems and examine solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.
about your teacher
Teacher, Casey Fletcher, majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, SC, with an emphasis on Wetland Ecology. Her first career was as an Environmental Consultant for an engineering firm, Earthworks. After three years here, she moved to Kodiak Island, Alaska to work as a kayak guide. Next, Casey became a kayaking and high ropes instructor for Thompson Island Outward Bound in Boston, MA. In addition to this, she also worked as a wilderness therapy guide at True North, backpacking with young folks through the Green Mountains of Vermont. Her experiences working with young people in nature inspired her to become a science teacher! So at the age of 27, Casey enrolled in the 180 Days in Springfield M.Ed. program at UMass-Amherst, and began her clinical teaching at The Springfield Renaissance School! And let's be real... once you've taught at Ren, how can you possibly want to go anywhere else???
Interconnectedness
Everything. Everything is connected. We are pebbles being dropped into the still pond, sending ripples out to invisible shorelines, rocking boats and moving fish as our energy passes.
If you take anything from this course, I hope it is this:
We are all one.
